Darwin crowds star struck by - Australia
November 18 Darwin
Darwin was buzzing with excitement today when more than 350 locals turned out for the special premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s epic adventure Australia.
The red carpet event was attended by the film’s actors, extras and volunteers, and survivors of the Bombing of Darwin, excited to see the Northern Territory’s story shared with the world.
Local actor Angus Pilakui, who stars as Goolaj in Australia and spent time with Hugh Jackman during filming, attended the premiere.
“The movie is great; it tells the story of indigenous culture and shows the country, and Hugh is a great guy, he’s awesome,” Angus said.
Also in attendance were Tiwi women Ilene Neville and Dorothea Berto, who were on Melville Island when the Japanese invaded Darwin on February 19, 1942.
“I was only seven years old at the time, I remember the Japanese flying over and the priest telling us to get under mattresses, but I was more excited than frightened,” Ilene said.
“I’m very excited to be at this event, Nicole Kidman is my favourite actress,” she said.
Speaking after the premiere, Dorothea said of the film: “It was a really lovely story, I loved it.”
Darwin scenes in Australia were filmed during a two-week period in July last year, and historic Stokes Hill Wharf can be seen throughout the film.
Australia will be released nationally on November 26.
