Itinerary - Giles Track

This track is suitable for experienced walkers who are capable and well equipped. All food, water and sleeping requirements for the journey need to be carried in and out.

Although the track is marked with red arrows, all walkers should bring a map and compass. It is possible to complete the walk in one long day rather than two by starting early.

Section 1

Giles Walking Track - Rim Walk Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon Rim Walk to Reedy Creek
Graded Moderate. The walk to Reedy Creek Campsite is 8 kilometres and takes 4 hours. The trailhead is 1 km walking anticlockwise on the Kings Canyon Rim Walk. For keen bushwalkers, the whole Rim Walk can be added to the walk and takes an extra 5 hours.

Giles Walking Track - Rim Walk Kings Canyon

Once on the Giles Track, the first part of the walk takes in beehive-shaped sandstone formations. Overlook vast sand plains before reaching a valley covered by eroded domes. The domes provide shelter for many reptiles and mammals, including the euro (small wallaby).

Giles Walking Track - Rim Walk Kings Canyon

Reedy Creek Campsite to Kathleen Springs
Graded Moderate. The walk to Kathleen Springs is 14 kms and takes 6 hours. Trek through shallow sand dunes and across rocky watercourses. Through this part of the range, ancient grinding stones, stone blades, stencilled art and petroglyphs can be found scattered through the flat rocky plateau.

Giles Walking Track - Rim Walk Kings Canyon

Enjoy fantastic views while walking through bushland scared by fire. You might spot one of the area’s non-native camels across the landscape when the cliffs of Kathleen Springs come into view. Cross several watercourses before ending the trek at Kathleen Springs.
