Photographic Journey - Top End
Sunrise at Nourlangie Rock, Kakadu: Be patient enough to sit and to watch the colours of the rocks change in the morning light. Nearby Anbanbang Billabong also attracts a host of birds and wallabies as the dry season advances - Ewen Bell.
Rock art at Injalak Hill, West Arnhem Land: In the shade of overhanging granite outcrops the soft tones of ochre, painted tens of thousands of years ago, provide rich colours and stories to photograph - Ewen Bell.
Turtle eggs in the sand on the beaches of Bathurst Island: Local guides can take you to explore the remote beaches of the Tiwis, home to crocodiles and turtles - Ewen Bell.
Yellow Water Billabong, Kakadu: Few places in the top end are as rich in wildlife as Yellow Waters, and the first boats leave at dawn so you can shoot birds and crocs in the soft glow of the sunrise - Ewen Bell.
Bawaka, Gove Peninsula: One of the best cultural experiences in Australia, at Bawaka you have a chance to learn about traditional foods and hunting in the Indigenous coastal communities. Coupled with the blinding beaches and the children in the community, there are endless opportunities to take fabulous photographs. As a whole, Arnhem Land is just brilliant - Ewen Bell.
Katherine River: Once the dry season begins the Katherine River is navigable by kayak, and there's no better way to get close to nature than paddling - Ewen Bell.
Bawaka, Gove Peninsula: Bawaka was one of the best things I have done in my whole life. Arnhem Land as a whole is just brilliant - Catherine Sutherland.
Bullo River Station: I still classify Bullo as the most beautiful landscape I have seen in the world. I adore that place, it’s really hard to beat - Catherine Sutherland.
Jim Jim Falls, Kakadu: These falls are well worth the drive (on a slow four-wheel drive track) and walk required to get to them. Be sure to travel at the start of the dry season when water is flowing but the roads are open - Ewen Bell.
Bamurru Plains: It is pretty special with wild brumbies and buffalo, and the amazing floodplains and ecosystems - Catherine Sutherland.
Mount Borradaile: This place has some of the best cultural photography you will get in the Territory with rock art, burial sites and amazing landscapes to top it off - Steve Strike.
Top End Photographic Journey
The Top End of Australia is home to unparalleled vistas of wide open spaces, pristine nature, rare birds and wildlife and access to some of the world’s oldest rock art.
The dry season (April-October) offers a concentration of unique Australian bird and wildlife centred around disappearing wetlands. The build-up (October-November) offers billowing cloud formations, breathtaking sunsets and dramatic lightning shows. The wet season brings a myriad greens back to the bush, as well as the replenishment of cooling swimming holes and waterfalls.
Many of the features of the Top End are at their most magnificent at sunset, as the refraction of light through the clouds paints the landscape every shade of pink. Make sure you pack your wide-angle lens – you’ll need it!
