Darwin

Every weekend, right through the Tropical Summer, Darwin is scattered with open-air markets in sleepy suburban shopping plazas. Stall holders move in to peddle their wares and share a smorgasbord of home cooking, Darwin style, and locally made arts and crafts. These markets are a popular choice among Darwin locals who avoid the supermarket and buy their fresh produce and exotic foods from the markets instead.

Our tropical summer, from December to early March, is considered by many to be the region's most beautiful time of year.

At this time of year, the northern destinations of Darwin, Katherine and Kakadu are refreshed by a predictable daily ritual of sunshine and afternoon showers. The weather is best described as 'sultry' - it's warm, but the tropical rains are cooling.

Darwin, the Northern Territory’s capital city, is a vibrant destination renowned for its tropical climate and colourful characters. It’s a lively harbour city with an enviable outdoor lifestyle, where, even in the Tropical Summer, almost everything is done outside – eating, drinking, shopping and movie-going. Here, it’s not unusual to watch TV from the hammock instead of the lounge room.

Our Tropical Summer is also the perfect time to escape the crowds. Darwin slows to a relaxed pace so travellers can exchange traffic jams and sand-filled bathers for a less hectic itinerary; sampling a smorgasbord of Asian dishes at weekend markets, watching storms roll in over the harbour from beachside pubs, swimming beneath cascading waterfalls and falling asleep to a chorus of green tree frogs. Waterfalls flow freely, floodplains rejuvenate, flowers bloom and cracking thunderstorms light up the sky like a pyrotechnic display.

This is also the perfect time of year to pick up a great holiday deal in the Top End and save money. Many hotels and tour operators offer specials for the season and as an added incentive, Tourism Top End has created a voucher book of top holiday bargains that can be picked up on your arrival.
