Merl
This site in northern Kakadu is perfect for campers who want to enjoy a famous sunrise or sunset at Ubirr. It's also an ideal base for bushwalking along the East Alligator River. There are showers, toilets and a generator zone. Camping fees are collected on site.
Gunlom
Gunlom is one of Kakadu's best known attractions thanks to a superb vista across the Park from the natural swimming pools at the top of the waterfall. There is a caravan park and campsite at the bottom of the Falls with a generator area, showers and barbecues.
Muirella Park
After an invigorating day exploring Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock, relax and stay overnight at the picturesque Muirella Park. Equipped with solar-heated showers, toilets and washing facilities, this cool, shaded campground is central to many of Kakadu’s attractions. Camping fees are collected on site from May to October or paid in advance at the Bowali Visitors Centre.
Koolpin Gorge
Koolpin Gorge, at the southern end of Kakadu National Park, is renowned for its spectacular scenery. Spend a day exploring the endless span of gorges, crystal rock pools and white sandy beaches. Camp alongside Koolpin Creek and, in the morning, take a refreshing dip in a plunge pool. Permits are necessary.
Adventure experiences abound in Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land.
Take a wildlife cruise past prehistoric crocodiles and glide alongside massive canyon walls that were thousands of years in the making. You can also view Kakadu’s magnificent escarpment, rainforest and roaring waterfalls from the air on a scenic flight, then swim in one of the Park’s many natural rock pools.
Sleeping out in a tent or swag lets you ease into the natural rhythms of the Park, and there are established camping areas close to most of Kakadu’s main attractions.
Other scenic bush camping spots can be reached by rugged four-wheel drive tracks, really giving you a taste of adventure travel, Territory-style. You need to apply for a permit (Kakadu permits office: 08 8938 1140) for these more remote camping spots, some of which may require a short walk in from their nearest car park.
Anyone wanting to venture into Arnhem Land needs to apply for a permit through the Northern Land Council (1800 645 299) and discuss the best spots to camp with the regional permit officer.
Availability of firewood may be scant at some campsites so ask the ranger about where to collect wood beforehand.
