Katherine Travel Guide
The vast Katherine region sets the scene for outback adventure activities.
Only three hours south of Darwin, Katherine is a unique outback town. Within easy reach of the town is the Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park, the Katherine Hot Springs and Leliyn (Edith Falls).
Katherine’s star attraction is undoubtedly the world famous Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge), which covers an awesome 3000 kilometres of magnificent escarpment country. On the Gorge you can cruise, canoe or swim between sheer cliffs to the sandy freshwater beaches of the main gorges, and view ancient Aboriginal rock paintings high on the rock faces. Spectacular waterfalls are found along more than 100 kilometres of walking tracks, Jatbula Trail being the most famous.
North of Katherine is Pine Creek, a township renowned for its pioneering history, or travel south to Mataranka, famous for its tropical thermal pool and the quirky Daly Waters Pub nearby.
The Victoria River region is regarded as a premier fishing holiday destination, while the Daly River region is another popular fishing and camping hotspot. The remote Gulf region is perfect for the more adventurous anglers.
