Experience the full impact of the icons of the Red Centre by exploring Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon on foot.
The serenity and majesty of Uluru is best explored on the 9.4 kilometre Base Walk. The walk is dotted with interpretive displays, as well as a network of waterholes and lush woodlands at Uluru’s base – one of the last things you’d expect in this seemingly stark desert landscape.
The Valley of the Winds walk at Kata Tjuta is an excellent alternative to climbing Uluru if you’re seeking elevated views of the surrounding Red Centre landscape. This 7.4 kilometre walk weaves through the immerse domes of Kata Tjuta and treats its trekkers to spectacular views from its two lookout points.
Ask any local and they will tell you that the Kings Canyon Rim Walk is a must-do for nature-lovers and trekking enthusiasts alike. The Kings Canyon Rim Walk affords a spectacular outlook over the Canyon’s sheer red rock walls, as well as a death-defying view to the Canyon floor 300 metres below.
For information on other walks in Watarrka and the nearby George Gill Ranges, contact the Ranger Station at Watarrka National Park on 08 8956 7488.
If you like your walks a little more leisurely, try the Kings Creek Walk which takes you through the Red Gum-lined floor of Kings Canyon, where unique Aussie flora abounds and the wildlife spotting opportunities are endless in the lush Garden of Eden.
Outdoor activities like bushwalking and camping are must-have experiences in the Red Centre region. Here is some travel information and safety tips to remember:
Try to keep out of the sun at midday, carry lots of water and sun protection and remember that temperatures can dip below freezing at night during the months of June to October.
