The hermannsburgpotters bring the vibrant landscape and spirit of Central Australia to life with their hand-crafted terracotta and underglaze pots. Taking inspiration from their natural environment, rich cultural history and daily life, the Potters depict their favourite themes and subjects including Country, family, birds, animals, bush tucker, mission days and, of course, football. Their iconic imagery features their country and culture in and around the area of Hermannsburg (Ntaria), based at the remote foothills of the majestic MacDonnell Ranges, 130km west of Alice Springs. Since 1990, the Hermannsburg Potters have been depicting their stories on unique hand-built ceramics, contributing to their self-employment and artistic career. Now regarded as master ceramicists, the world-renowned Western Arranta artists have an extensive career exhibiting widely through Australia and internationally. A highlight was their 2016 commission for the National Gallery of Victoria, ‘Our Land is Alive’, which set new benchmarks for their engaging and lyrical pots. Visitors to Parrtjima 2022 learned about pottery from the acclaimed Hermannsburg Potters with a live pottery demonstration and skills tutorial. The Hermannsburg artists continue a 30-year legacy, sculpting and painting their visual histories and contemporary settings, speaking to their cultural beliefs, traditions and values. “Palm Valley, within the Finke Gorge National Park, is an east-west running valley in the Krichauff Range 123 km southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, Australia. Palm Valley and the surrounding area is the only place in Central Australia where Red Cabbage Palms survive. The track to Palm Valley is still only accessible with a four-wheel drive vehicle.
